Graduated in 1969 with 9 varsity letters made up of three in basketball, three in tennis, two in golf, and one in baseball.
As a basketball standout, Phil is one of the most statistically decorated players in Lakeland boys’ basketball history. Fifty-five years after graduating, he still ranks in the top 10 in 19 different statistical categories in the Laker boys’ basketball record books.
A few of his accomplishments include:
2nd All-Time - Free Throws made in a single game (18)
3rd All-Time - Field Goals made in a single game (13)
6th All-Time - Free Throws made in a single season (106), Career Free Throw % (81.5) and Career Def. Rebounds (263)
7th All-Time - Career 2PT Field Goals Made (273) and Def. Rebounds in a single season (139)
8th All-Time- Career Rebounds per game (7.1)
9th All-Time- Career Average Points per game (14.5)
Helped lead the 1968 boys’ basketball team to a Sectional Championship and an appearance in the Regional Finals.
Also the #2 golfer on the Lakeland 1968 Regional Qualifying golf team.
After graduating from Purdue, became a career educator, serving as a teacher and curriculum director, and he’s written 10 books on the topic of project-based education.
Retired in 2013 and enjoys writing fiction in his free time.
