Coaching Induction - Boys' Basketball (9 Years)
Served as the first Boys' Basketball Coach for Lakeland during the 1964-65 School Year.
In his first season as Boys' Basketball coach, he led the Lakers to a 21-3 record and won an IHSAA Sectional Championship.
Won 3 Sectional Championships - 1965, 1968, & 1970.

Coach Butt served as the first Boys’ Basketball Coach of Lakeland High School during the 1964-65 season. He went on to lead the program for 9 years, having tremendous success.

During the inaugural season, Coach Butt led the Lakers to a 21-3 record, winning the 1965 IHSAA Sectional Championship, qualifying the team for regionals. That team held the largest winning margin per game of any team in the IHSAA Sectional.

Coach Butt continued to have success by bringing home two more Sectional Championships in 1968 and 1970. Totaling in 3 during his 9 year tenure.
After moving on from Lakeland High School, Coach Butt was selected in 1983 by the United States Government, in conjunction with the International Sports Exchange, to be 1 of 5 individuals to conduct basketball clinics in Africa for teams, individuals, and coaches.

Coach Richard Butt laid the foundation for Lakeland Basketball! His leadership, character, and passion for the sport is what allowed him to build team camaraderie and team chemistry within a newly consolidated team. He was able to bring a community together and fill these bleachers countless times for the growth and development of the school, as well as the players he coached.
